Spots and blocked pores caused from masks.

What causes maskne?

Maskne is when friction between the mask and skin can cause irritation.

This can be the result of a few things:

Not washing reusable masks or changing medical masks often enough, dirty masks will block pores with bacteria and grime causing spots. Chafing causes water loss while warmth from the nose causes bacteria. Breathing back hot breath creates the perfect temperature for bacteria to thrive.

What can help?

Double cleansing at night is imperative! Removing all traces of makeup, SPF, daily dirt and grime is a must, the second cleanse is what makes sure your skin is clean and ready for whatever treatment you may wish to use.

Tips for maskne

Change masks frequently and wash reusable masks at hot temperatures to kill all bacteria. Using a mask made of silk would be perfect! Double cleanse every evening, after the cleanse stage use a toner containing glycolic or lactic acid to gently exfoliate the skin.

Using a barrier cream will keep your skin moisturised which helps to relieve any tightness from wearing your mask, I find when I wear mine I can feel the moisture being sucked out of my skin! Wearing a barrier cream will help prevent the dryness that comes with wearing a mask.

For spots that are present use a product with salicylic acid to reduce the inflammation and control the build up of excess sebum.

Remember to keep your skin well hydrated , using a product with hydrolunonic acid, don't be tempted to strip your skin with harsh, oil stripping products, it will only make it worse!
